OKC Rowers Make an Impression at HOCR
OKC RIVERSPORT and OKC National High Performance Center crews represented Oklahoma at the world’s largest two-day regatta, the Head of the Charles, Oct. 22-23. Racing in events including the adaptive trunk and arms double, the youth men’s and women’s eights, the men’s masters double and quad, the women’s masters single, and various championship events.
Posting one of the most impressive results of the regatta was Tony Davis and his trunk and arms adaptive mixed double partner Jacqui Kapinowski who won their event, covering the 3-mile head race course in 24:32, holding off second place by nearly a minute and a half – a rarity for this race. This year was the first time the Head of the Charles offered adaptive rowing events; six crews raced in the trunk and arms race.
Among the newcomers to the race was OKC RIVERSPORT masters rower Heather Mosley, who placed an impressive second in the women’s masters single out of 21 single scullers. Mosley learned how to row at the Chesapeake Boathouse just five years ago.
OKC RIVERSPORT masters rower John Sanders rowed for the third time at the event, teaming up with boat mates from the east coast to race both the men’s masters double and Director’s Challenge men’s quad, finishing 9th out of 19 and 11th out of 38 respectively. Sanders’ quad faced competition from some of the top rowers in the world, as New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale, 2011 World Rowing gold medalist in the men’s single and Emma Twigg, 2011 World Rowing bronze medalist in the women’s single, teamed up with Americans Gevvie Stone and Andrew Campbell who each placed 11th in their singles races at the 2011 World Rowing Championships. Team “Kiweagle” took second in the event.
OKC National High Performance Center’s pre-elite rower Bill Schnittman placed 21st out of 32 single scullers in the men’s championship single, while high performance rower Hilary Cumbest finished 14th out of 25.
The OKC RIVERSPORT Chesapeake Juniors competed in the youth men’s and women’s eights, with the men finishing in the middle of the pack in 44th place out of 75 crews and the women recording a top 20 finish, coming in 19th place out of 74 crews.
Upcoming races for OKC RIVERSPORT and the OKC National High Performance Center athletes include the Head of the Colorado, October 29 in Austin, TX; Head of the Hooch, November 5-6 in Chatanooga, TN; the Frostbite Regatta, November 5-6 in Wichita, KS, and USRowing Fall Speed orders November 10-11 in Chula Vista, CA and November 12-13 in Princeton, NJ.
