OKLAHOMA CITY (June 19, 2023) – RIVERSPORT OKC and the OKC Black Alumni Coalition are teaming up to host the Juneteenth River Bowl Cookout on Monday, June 19, at Chesapeake Boathouse. The event will offer a unique opportunity for the community to come together with the River Bowl Rowers and commemorate this milestone in American history.
“We are thrilled to join with the OKC Black Alumni Coalition to host the River Bowl Cookout,” said Executive Director Mike Knopp. “This event allows us to come together as a community, celebrate diversity, and reflect on the progress made towards equality. We invite everyone to join us for a great evening.”
The OKC Black Alumni Coalition rowing teams were conceptualized by Shawntay Alexander, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the organization in May 2022. Alumni come together for weekly practices hosted by RIVERSPORT. The season culminates with the River Bowl Classic on August 12. The River Bowl classic was created to evoke the spirit of the Soul Bowl – the traditional football rivalry between Millwood and Douglass high schools.
“River Bowl is unique because it’s focus on community building and placemaking in the Black community by way of accessing water sports defies historical barriers.” Shawntay Alexander, Executive Director and Co-Founder, Oklahoma City Black Alumni Coalition
The Juneteenth River Bowl Cookout will be held at the Chesapeake Boathouse starting at 8:00 p.m.
