Flatwater Kayak FAQ
Where can I rent a kayak?
Kayaks are included with Day or Season Passes in the Boathouse District. You can also rent a kayak at Lake Overholser Boathouse and/or RIVERSPORT’s Flat Tide truck (just south of the 39th Street bridge) for $20/hour. Tandem (two person) kayaks are available at Lake Overholser for $20/hour per person. Kayaks can’t be reserved and are first come, first served.
Do I need previous experience to kayak?
We recommend taking a Discover Kayaking class if you’ve never kayaked before, but our dock staff will also give you pointers if you want to try it on your own. PFDs are required at all times.
Can I bring my own kayak?
Yes, you are welcome to use your own kayak. We recommend you check-in at the Chesapeake Boathouse to see if there is anything you should be aware of before you head out (races, for example). We suggest you use the dock in front of the Finish Line Tower – it is the least busy.
If I’m going on a group kayaking experience, what do I need to know?
Be sure to check your email the day before. We will send you a confirmation email outlining general information about your experience. We will also email you if weather makes it necessary to postpone the experience. It is also important to let us know if you will have any children between the ages of 5 and 8 so we can arrange a tandem boat for you.
When do I need to arrive?
We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes early to complete the check -in process so we can get you on the water quickly.
What should I wear?
For days that are warm or hot, we recommend a t-shirt, windbreaker if needed, and shorts. For cooler days, we suggest layering with long pants, t-shirt, a windbreaker or if needed, heavier jacket.
Wear closed sneakers or athletic shoes and many people find a hat and/or sunglasses cut down glare on sunny days.
It is important to remember that you will be on the water and you may get a little wet. We always suggest bringing a few dry towels or extra clothes in case this happens.
What waivers need to be completed?
All participants will need to fill out a waiver. If participants are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian will need to complete the waivers. Save time by signing your waiver online; look for the floating link on this page.
What should I bring?
We recommend sunscreen to help protect against sunburn. If your experience is during the evening, bug spray will help keep insects away. You might also want to consider bringing bottled water, a snack, towels, sunglasses, a hat, and extra clothes.
Where do I park?
Onsite parking is available at all locations. If your experience is at the Boathouse District, please keep in mind that parking may be limited at times due to events and other programs. Allow yourself a few minutes to park and walk. Designated parking areas are available on both the east and west sides of Lincoln Blvd.
What if I cannot make my kayaking experience?
If you are unable to make the outing you signed up for, please notify us by email in advance. We will work to reschedule your experience or further discuss your options if you choose to cancel.
